1What is a video sales letter (VSL)?
VSL meaning: what does VSL stand for?
VSL stands for video sales letter. That is its meaning in marketing and business.
A VSL is a sales letter turned into a video. One recording walks a buyer through the problem, your way of solving it, your proof, your offer and the next step.
It doesn't need to look fancy or need special video sales letter software. For business owners, plain screen-recorded slides often beat polished designs, and many top VSLs never show the presenter's face.
A VSL funnel is the set of pages around that video. Each step has one job and one number to watch.
| Step | Its job | Number to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Ad | Stop the right person with one promise | Cost per click |
| Opt-in page | Get a name and email before the video | Opt-in rate |
| VSL page | The video, then an apply button | Play rate, share watched |
| Application | About 3 questions that sort buyers | Completion |
| Booking | The calendar, in the same flow | Booking rate |
| Reminders | Emails, texts and a confirmation video | Show rate |
| Sales call | Your closer makes the sale | Close rate |

2VSL vs webinar vs sales page: what is the difference?
| VSL | Webinar | Sales page | Explainer video | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A scripted sales video | A training with a pitch at the end | A long written page | A short video on how a product works |
| Length | 2 to 15 minutes for business owners | About an hour or more | As long as the reader needs | Short |
| Asks for | A booked call or a purchase | A booked call or a purchase | A purchase | Usually a trial or a demo |
| Price it fits | Up to about $1,000 with checkout; above that, a call | Mid to high ticket | Under about $300 | Not built to sell alone |
| Runs | Every day | On a schedule | Every day | Every day |
| Best when buyers | Know the problem and want a fast answer | Need teaching and trust first | Buy without talking to anyone | Need to see the product |
In markets that need a lot of teaching, some operators report a one-hour recorded training beating a direct VSL funnel about 3x at the same cost per call. Many of our clients run both. See the done-for-you webinar funnel for the other side.
3How does a VSL funnel book calls?
- VSL ads make one promise. The same promise has to open the video, or people leave.
- The opt-in catches the name first. In one split test with the same ads and spend, the funnel with an opt-in returned 10x on ad spend against 2.7x without, because every opt-in gets a call and emails, even if they never finish the video.
- The video sells the call. Many operators only show the apply button once the video reaches the offer, so your team only talks to people who heard it.
- The application sorts. A few questions, then the calendar on the same page.
- Your team follows up fast. Text within 2 to 3 minutes and call within 5 to 7.
- Reminders get them to show. Then your closer takes the call.
4What numbers should a VSL funnel hit?
Other operators' numbers from high ticket call funnels, not Cashflow Coaches results.
| Number | Benchmark |
|---|---|
| Cost per 1,000 ad views (CPM) | $30 to $80 |
| Link click-through rate | about 2% |
| Clicks that become booked calls | 3% to 5% |
| Cost per booked call | $100 to $300; $500 to $1,000 for long sales cycles or very big tickets |
| VSL play rate | 30% and up is good |
| Share of the video watched | 50% or more is the target |
| Application and calendar on separate pages | about half of qualified applicants never book, against about a 16% drop when they sit in one flow |
| Show rate, cold traffic, one-call close | 60%+ target; plan on 40% to 50% while you test |
| Close rate | 25% in one example funnel where every step was in range |
Blake Mathews, one of our B2B clients on a $15K offer, got to $66 per booked call. Not typical.
5The VSL funnel math tool
Put in one month of numbers.
Under $1.20 back for every $1 of ads loses money once fees and team costs come out.
Step check: which step is weakest?
Compare each step to its benchmark. Fix the one that is easiest to double.
| Step | Yours | Benchmark | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opt-in rate | 30% | 20%+ | In range |
| Watch rate | 20% | 30%+ | Below |
| Clicks to booked calls | 1.5% | 3%+ | Below |
| Show rate | 60% | 60%+ | In range |
| Close rate | 20% | 25%+ | Below |
| Cost per booked call | $200 | $100 to $300 | In range |
Weakest step: watch rate. Lift it to 30% and revenue goes from $30,000 to $45,000.
Every step in range and still short on cash? The leak may sit outside the funnel, in the offer or the sales team. Take two minutes to find the exact bottleneck in your business.

We only use this to send your numbers and to follow up about your client acquisition. If you add a mobile, we may call or text you about it.6How do you write a VSL that books calls?
A VSL is a sales call where the buyer is on mute. Viewers are not trying to watch all of it. They are deciding, fast, whether it is for them. So each part answers the question they have at that moment. Leave a question unanswered and they stop listening to everything after it.
Start from your sales calls. The strongest VSLs answer the questions buyers ask most on real sales calls, in order of how often they come up. One way is to load 10 to 20 sales call transcripts into an AI tool and ask it to list every question and objection, ranked by how often it comes up.
The VSL structure, part by part: what to say and when
The order follows a good sales call. The offer lands near the halfway mark, with no price. The investment is for the call.
Its job Tell them what you can do for them, right away. They pressed play to find out if this is for them, so answer that first.
If you're [who it is for] and you want [the result] in [time], this video shows you how. I'll cover how it works, who it's for and what you get.
Get it wrong Opening with "Hi, I'm..." or your life story. When people press play and leave within seconds, the opening usually breaks the ad's promise, often with a self-introduction.
Its job Answer the question in their head: "why should I listen to you?" Use proof you would say out loud in a real conversation.
We've helped [exact number] [people like them] in [years]. [Client name] went from [before] to [after] in [time].
Get it wrong Logo walls and "as seen in". Round numbers sound like marketing. "212 clients" lands, "hundreds of clients" does not.
Its job Walk through why people buy this, the biggest reason first, then the smaller ones. Show why the old way stops working. This is one of the two long parts.
Most [who it is for] try [the old way]. It works for a while, then it stops, because [the real reason]. The ones who get [the result] do [your method] instead.
Get it wrong Blaming the viewer. The old way failed them, not the other way round.
Its job Your method in three plain steps, so it feels doable. A 10 year old should be able to repeat them.
[Your method] has three steps. Step one: [step]. Step two: [step]. Step three: [step].
Get it wrong Listing every module. Save the detail for the call.
Its job Say what they get and what it gets them. Leave the investment for the call.
Here's how we help you do it. You get [what is included]. By the end you'll have [the outcome]. We go through the investment on the call, once we know it's a fit.
Get it wrong Saying the price. The video sells the call, and the call is where the investment is discussed, once you know their situation. Bonuses with made-up prices make buyers trust you less, so skip those too.
Its job The questions buyers ask on your sales calls, most common first. Each one gets a straight answer and a piece of proof. This is the other long part, and the one that sells.
Here are the questions people ask me most. "[Most common question]" [Your answer in two or three sentences.] [A client or a number that backs it up.]
Get it wrong Guessing the questions. Pull them from recorded calls. Business owners need the 2 or 3 hard ones. The general public needs 4 or 5, including money.
Its job Let the right people lean in and the wrong people leave.
This is for [who it is for] who [trait]. It's not for [who it is not for]. If that's you, please don't book.
Get it wrong Leaving it out. Without it, your calendar fills with people your closer cannot help.
Its job One action, and what happens after it.
If this sounds like you, click the button below this video. Answer three quick questions and pick a time. On the call we'll tell you straight if it fits.
Get it wrong Two asks at once, like "book a call, or join my group". Pick one. If you have time left, add 2 or 3 short client results and repeat the button.
Business owners vs the general public
| Business owners, high earners | General public | |
|---|---|---|
| Hook | One sentence, about 10 seconds | Up to 30 seconds, with a little more context |
| Tone | Direct and sure. No fluff. | Warm. Too much authority reads as arrogance. |
| Slides | Plain: black text on white, or the reverse | Well designed. Plain slides can look like a scam to this buyer. |
| Claims | Understate. They spot hype fast. | The biggest claim that is true and you can prove |
| Questions part | The 2 or 3 hard questions | 4 or 5, including money worries. Say the call covers the investment and the options. |
The rows without a source are our view from building these, not measured benchmarks.
What every VSL script must contain
- The ad's promise in the first sentence. Same words as the ad.
- Who it is for, by name. "If you're a [who]..." in the opening line.
- One real result. A name, a before, an after and a time. Never a placeholder.
- The method in three plain steps.
- The offer, with no price. What they get and the outcome. The investment is for the call.
- No made-up bonus values.
- The top questions from real calls, most common first, each with proof.
- Who it is not for.
- One next step. Book or apply. Nothing else.
- Chapters named after the parts. Buyers jump to the part they care about, like scrolling a page.
Paste your draft into the VSL script grader to check it against this list. To have it written for you, get the VSL master Claude skill. It writes the full script in this structure from your offer and your sales call questions. For fill-in blocks and real examples, see the video sales letter template.
8How long should a VSL be?
| Who is watching | Length to start | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Business owners, high earners | 2 to 15 minutes, often under 10 | Direct, no fluff, careful claims |
| The general public | 5 to 10 minutes, 60 at most | On long VSLs, about 10% or fewer stay to the later parts |
Long enough to cover the eight parts, and no longer. Write every part, then cut words, not parts. If people drop off in the first seconds, fix the opening before you cut the length. The drop-off diagnostic tells you which part to fix from your video stats.
9What do the best VSL examples look like?
Video sales letter examples other operators have shared, with the numbers they reported.
| Market | The VSL | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| Coaching to stop drinking | One VSL page, then a 14 to 15 question application | $6.8M in a year from that one funnel |
| Tax strategy, $12K offer | A 20 to 25 minute VSL | 3.08x on ad spend, $8,673 per deal |
| Service sold to dentists | 12 minutes, promising 50 to 100 new patients a month | $7,500 to $8,000 paid up front |
| B2B coaching | Built from the top sales call questions, in order | $80 to $90 per qualified call, against a usual $200 to $300 |
Our own booked-call numbers come from webinar funnels and booking flows, not a VSL alone. More breakdowns and a template are on the video sales letter page.
VSL funnel examples: three page flows
A. Opt-in first
Watch opt-in rate and speed to lead.
B. Video page, form underneath
Some operators skip the opt-in and put the form and calendar on the video page. Watch play rate and booking rate.
C. Application first, video after
In one funnel this cut cost per qualified call from about $550 to about $100. Watch show rate, because the video now does the warming up.
10Should the VSL go before or after the booking?
Both work. Pick by where your funnel leaks.
| Video before booking | Video after booking | |
|---|---|---|
| Who books | People who heard the offer | Anyone who fills the form |
| Cost per booked call | Higher | Lower: about $100 against $550 in one funnel |
| Show and close | Warmer calls | Depends on people watching before the call |
| Pick it when | Calls are full of the wrong people | Too few people book at all |
With the video after, put it on the confirmation page and ask in a text whether they watched.
11What should happen after someone watches?
- About three questions. About three typed questions is the sweet spot between lead quality and volume.
- Skip the income question. In one poll, 70% of business owners said they would lie about income on a form. Ask something that shows fit instead.
- Application and calendar in one flow. Split them, and about half of qualified applicants never book.
- A fast page. In one funnel, a slow booking widget dropped completion to 30%, and about one second of load time cost roughly $200 per call.
- Book close in. Keep the booking window under about 72 hours.
- A video on the confirmation page. One urgency video on a confirmation page raised show rate by 19%. Check yours with the show rate calculator.
For one client, a qualified booking flow under an existing audience took him from lumpy $15K months to $95K cash in a month. Not typical.
12Free VSL funnel template
Copy these four blocks into your page builder and fill in the [brackets]. The video script is on the video sales letter template page, with a free PDF.
Headline: How [who it is for] [get the result] in [time], without [the old way] Sub: Watch the free [length] minute video. Fields: first name, email, phone Button: Watch the video
Headline: the same promise as the ad, word for word The video, with chapters Button (shows when the offer starts): See if you qualify Under the video: 3 client results and the top 3 questions
1. Where are you now with [the problem]? 2. What have you tried so far? 3. If we can help, are you ready to start in the next 30 days? Then: the calendar, calls within 72 hours
Headline: You're booked. One step left. A short video: what happens on the call, and what to have ready Add to calendar button Text within 3 minutes: confirm the time, ask if they watched
13Worked example: Marcus fixes the first 30 seconds
Marcus is a made-up business coach with a $5,000 offer. He spends $10,000 a month on ads.
| Line | The maths | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks | $10,000 ÷ $3 | 3,333 |
| Opt-ins | 3,333 × 30% | 1,000 |
| Watched the VSL | 1,000 × 20% | 200 |
| Booked calls | 200 × 25% | 50 ($200 each) |
| Calls that showed | 50 × 60% | 30 |
| New clients | 30 × 20% | 6 |
| Revenue | 6 × $5,000 | $30,000 (3.0x) |
His step check shows a 20% watch rate. His ad promised a result, but his video opened with his life story. He rewrites the first 30 seconds to repeat the ad's promise. His watch rate goes to 40%. Nothing else changes.
- 200 watched, 50 booked
- $200 per booked call
- 6 clients, 3.0x
- 400 watched, 100 booked
- $100 per booked call
- 12 clients, 6.0x
Made-up example. Same ads, same $10,000.
14Is the VSL dead?
No. Some operators say buyers have seen so many VSLs that most don't watch, so a VSL funnel still needs setters and closers. We agree it needs the team. The opt-in, follow-up, reminders and sales calls matter as much as the video. People who skip the video still get a text and a call.
A VSL also does not have to look like a sales video. A recorded client case study, a live audit or a demo can make the same eight points while the viewer feels they are watching content. Match the title and the people on screen to the buyer you want, because they decide who watches.
15What does a VSL funnel cost?
Two costs: the build and the ads. A done-for-you VSL funnel from Cashflow Coaches is a one-time five-figure install, with the exact number on a call. Ad spend is separate and paid from your own ad account. Webinar funnel cost breaks down both, and a VSL funnel works the same way. To see what one client costs you once it runs, use the client acquisition cost calculator.
16What to do this week
- Pull 10 recorded sales calls. List every question buyers ask, most common first.
- Write the script in the eight parts above, with those questions in part 6.
- Record it as slides with your voice. Keep the first sentence to the ad's promise.
- Put the application and calendar on one page, with about three questions.
- Set a text within 3 minutes and a call within 7 for every new opt-in.
- After one week of traffic, put your numbers in the math tool and fix the weakest step.
If you want a team to build and run it with you, see if you qualify.

Frequently asked questions
What does VSL mean?
In marketing, VSL means video sales letter. It is a sales letter turned into a video: one recording that walks a buyer through the problem, your way of solving it, your proof, your offer and the next step. Many VSLs are just slides with a voice over.
What does VSLS stand for?
VSLS is the plural: video sales letters. In marketing it just means more than one sales video. Other groups use the same letters for other things, so check the context.
What is a VSL funnel?
A VSL funnel is a short path from an ad to a sales call. The ad sends people to an opt-in page, they watch a video sales letter, and the people who fit apply and book a call with your team.
What is VSL in a funnel?
In a funnel, the VSL is the step that does the selling before a call. It sits after the ad and opt-in and before the application. Operators commonly report a 30% play rate or better as good. The people who watch to the offer and apply are the ones your closers talk to.
What is a VSL landing page?
A VSL landing page, sometimes called a VSL website, is the page that holds the video. It has a headline that repeats the ad's promise, the video, and an apply or book button, often shown once the video reaches the offer.
Is a VSL better than a webinar?
Neither wins every time. A VSL is minutes long and runs every day, so it suits buyers who already know the problem. A webinar runs about an hour and suits buyers who need more teaching first. Many coaches run both.
How long should a VSL be?
Business owners and high earners: 2 to 15 minutes, often under 10. For the general public, start at 5 to 10 minutes and go no longer than about 60.
Should you say the price in a VSL?
No. The VSL sells the call, not the program. Cover what they get and the outcome, then discuss the investment on the call, once you know the buyer's situation and can show them the right option.
What is a good VSL play rate?
30% and up is a good play rate, meaning 30 of every 100 page visitors press play.
