Skool vs Whop for Paid Communities

If your group is the product, Skool is the better home: one simple feed, a course area, points and free members from Discovery. Whop wins on fees at most sizes, with no monthly plan and 2.7% + 30¢ per US sale, and it suits sellers with many products or buyers paying in other currencies.

2Which costs less at your member count?

Whop has no plan fee and a lower card rate. The gap shrinks when you turn on its billing tools (0.5%), sell to buyers abroad (1.5%) or let it handle tax (2%). Skool's price does not move. With billing on, Skool Pro becomes cheaper once a $49 group passes about 456 members.

GroupSales a monthSkoolWhopWhop + billing
25 members at $49$1,225$139 Hobby$42.33$48.45
100 members at $49$4,900$271.10 Pro$169.30$193.80
300 members at $49$14,700$615.30 Pro$507.90$581.40
1,000 members at $49$49,000$1,820 Pro$1,693$1,938
2,000 members at $10$20,000$1,279 Pro$1,280$1,380

US cards only. Whop includes the $0.07 fraud check on each sale. At a $10 price with 2,000 members, the two cost about the same, because Whop's per-sale charges add up on small payments.

4Is Whop actually worth it?

For the right seller, yes. Whop is a payments and digital products company with public fees. It suits sellers with several products, buyers in many countries, or many affiliates. It is less suited to a coach who needs one calm place where members show up every day. Whop builds your community from apps you add, while Skool gives every group the same simple layout.

7Skool or Whop: take the 6-question check

Which fits you, Skool or Whop?
1. What are you selling?
2. How much does daily member activity matter?
3. Where will new members come from?
4. Do your buyers need to pay in their own currency?
5. Do you want to offer pay later (Klarna, Afterpay)?
6. How simple must it be for you and members?

Our view from building groups, not a rule from either company.

8Worked example: Tasha stays on Skool

Tasha is a made-up language coach. She has 200 members at $29 a month. About 60% of them live outside the US. She sells one group with lessons and two live calls a week.

    Skool ProWhop
    Sales a month$5,800$5,800
    Plan$99$0
    Fees$228.20$282.80
    Total a month$327.20$282.80

Whop saves her $44.40 a month, about $533 a year. She stays on Skool because the group is the product and members need one place to show up. Two extra members a month from Discovery cover the gap. If she started selling downloads and charging in euros, Whop would win. Tasha's numbers are an example, not a result.

    10What to do this week

    1. Count your members, your price and how many pay from abroad.
    2. Run the calculator with billing tools on and off.
    3. Take the check. Write down the one reason that decided it.
    4. If Skool wins, read Skool pricing to pick Hobby or Pro.
    5. If Whop wins on cost but Skool on fit, ask: will 2 extra members a month cover the gap?
    6. See the rest in Skool alternatives, Skool vs Circle and Skool vs Kajabi.
    7. Already on Whop and Skool wins? Use the six-step move plan and announcement email so members come with you.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Skool or Whop better for a paid community?

If the group is the product, Skool: one simple feed, points, a course area and free members from Discovery. If you sell many product types or to buyers in many currencies, Whop, which also costs less in fees at most sizes.

    Is Whop cheaper than Skool?

Usually, yes. Whop lists no monthly plan and charges 2.7% + 30 cents per US card sale, plus a 7 cent fraud check. Skool Pro is $99 a month plus 2.9% + 30 cents. Whop add-ons and overseas card fees can close the gap.

    Is Whop actually worth it?

For sellers with several products, global buyers or affiliates, yes. For a coach who needs one calm place where members show up every day, Skool is often the better fit even at a slightly higher cost.

Is Whop good for selling courses?

Whop can host a course as an app inside your whop, next to chat and forums. If the course is your main product and you also need funnels and email, Kajabi is worth comparing.

    Is Whop real or fake?

Whop is a real company. It runs payments in 195 countries and publishes its fees, tax rules and payout options in its own docs. As with any marketplace, check each seller before you buy from them.

    Why do people use Whop?

Low fees, no monthly plan, many currencies and payment methods, fast payouts and a marketplace with affiliates. It lets one seller sell groups, downloads, software and calls from one store.

    What are alternatives to Whop?

For communities: Skool, Circle, Mighty Networks and Discord. For creator stores: Stan Store and Patreon. For courses: Kajabi and Teachable. We compare all of them in Skool alternatives.

Does Whop charge a monthly fee?

Whop's fees page lists no monthly plan fee. You pay per sale (2.7% + 30 cents on US cards), plus optional add-ons such as billing (0.5%) and managed tax (2%), and a fee per payout. Checked 22 October 2026.
