1What is ROAS in marketing, and what does it mean?
ROAS stands for return on ad spend. The simple ROAS definition: how many dollars came back for each dollar you put into ads.
A ROAS of 1x means you got your ad money back and nothing more. Delivery costs still come out of that revenue, so 1x loses money.
It is written three ways. All three are the same number.
| Written as | Example | Read it as |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple | 4x | $4 back for every $1 of ads |
| Ratio | 4:1 | Same thing |
| Percent | 400% | Same thing. Multiply the multiple by 100 |
$100K+ in one week$30K of it in wires
$54.5K in one dayPlus an ACH wire pending
$30K by lunchtimeCash collected for the dayReal screenshots from our clients and our stories. Not typical.
2What is the ROAS formula, and how do you calculate it?
To find ROAS, divide revenue from ads by ad spend. Use the same dates for both numbers.
- A simple sale. You spend $1,000 and the ads bring in $4,000. $4,000 ÷ $1,000 = 4x.
- A coaching program. Priya spends $6,000 on ads. She closes 3 clients at $5,000 each, so $15,000. $15,000 ÷ $6,000 = 2.5x.
- The same month, counted in cash. Each client paid $2,000 up front and the rest over the next months. Cash in the bank is $6,000. $6,000 ÷ $6,000 = 1.0x.
Same ads and same clients give 2.5x or 1.0x, depending on what you count. If you sell on calls, that gap matters most. See ROAS for high ticket offers.
3Quick ROAS calculator: what is your real ROAS, and is it good?
If you sell on calls, the ROAS in your ad account is mostly a guess. Use your bank and CRM numbers. Priya's month is filled in.
To test a whole month with show and close rates, use the ROAS calculator.
4What is a good ROAS? Is 2.8 or 3.0 good?
A good ROAS is one above your break-even line. So 2.8 and 3.0 can be great or a loss. It depends on how much of each sale you keep before ads.
Find your margin. Read across.
| Margin before ads | Break-even ROAS | Is 2.8x good? | Profit per $1,000 at 2.8x | Is 3.0x good? | Profit per $1,000 at 3.0x |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30% | 3.33x | No, losing | −$160 | No, losing | −$100 |
| 40% | 2.50x | Thin | $120 | Thin | $200 |
| 50% | 2.00x | Thin | $400 | Healthy | $500 |
| 60% | 1.67x | Healthy | $680 | Healthy | $800 |
| 70% | 1.43x | Healthy | $960 | Healthy | $1,100 |
| 80% | 1.25x | Healthy | $1,240 | Healthy | $1,400 |
| 90% | 1.11x | Strong | $1,520 | Strong | $1,700 |
Under break-even is losing. Up to 1.5 times break-even is thin. 1.5 to 2.5 times is healthy. Over 2.5 times is strong.
What ROAS benchmarks do high ticket operators report?
There is no industry average ROAS for coaching and call-based offers that we can trace to a source. These are operator reports.
| Situation | What operators report |
|---|---|
| Ads to a high ticket offer | About 4x on revenue and about 2x on cash collected up front |
| Well run high ticket ads | About 2x to 3x up front, 4x to 5x once renewals and upsells come in |
| A cold webinar that is working | About 3x to 5x. A weak one sits near break-even |
| A cash floor for ad spend | Every $1,000 spent should bring back at least $1,200 in cash |
5ROAS vs ROI vs ACoS vs POAS: what is the difference?
Priya's month: $6,000 of ads, $15,000 of sales, a 60% margin before ads.
| Number | Formula | Question it answers | Priya |
|---|---|---|---|
| ROAS | revenue ÷ ad spend | How much came back per ad dollar? | 2.50x |
| ACoS | ad spend ÷ revenue | What share of sales went to ads? The flip of ROAS | 40% |
| POAS | profit before ads ÷ ad spend | How much profit came back per ad dollar? 1x is break-even | 1.50x |
| ROI | (profit after all costs) ÷ all costs | Did the whole thing make money? | depends on overhead |
A 3x ROAS can still lose money if delivery, commission and fees eat more than two thirds of each sale.
6What is break-even ROAS, and what is true ROAS?
Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ your margin before ads. Your margin is what is left of each sales dollar after the costs that come with a sale: delivery, commission and payment fees.
Run it at your own margin in the break-even ROAS calculator.
True ROAS is not a fixed term. It usually means ROAS after you clean up the inputs:
- Same dates. Ad spend and revenue must cover the same days. A sale from last month's ads is not this month's return.
- Every ad dollar. Add retargeting and every ad account. Leaving one out makes ROAS look better than it is.
- Cash, not promises. Count money that reached the bank. Keep booked sales as a second number.
- Refunds out. Take refunds, chargebacks and failed payment plan charges out of revenue.
- Your records, not the platform's. Tag each booking with where it came from, then match sales from your CRM.
- All costs in the margin. Put commission and payment fees in your margin, or your break-even line sits too low.
It is almost always lower than the number in the ad account. Plan with it.
7How should high ticket offers measure ROAS?
Measure it on cash collected, and check it against booked revenue. On a $3,000 to $25,000 offer, the sale happens on a call, often days later and often on a payment plan.
Why the ROAS in your ad account is wrong for call funnels
- The ad platform cannot see the sale. It sees a form fill or a booked call. The sale happens on the phone and gets paid by invoice or card later.
- The sale often lands outside the window. Ad platforms only credit a sale for a set number of days after the click. A call booked for next week, closed the week after, can fall out.
- The value is a guess. If you send a value with the "booked call" event, the platform's ROAS is your guess times the number of bookings. It is not money.
- Payment plans split the cash. A $9,000 sale paid $3,000 a month is $3,000 this month. Booked ROAS counts all $9,000.
Cash ROAS vs booked ROAS
| Priya's month | Revenue counted | ROAS | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Booked sales | $15,000 | 2.50x | Above her 1.67x break-even |
| Cash collected | $6,000 | 1.00x | Below break-even, so the ad bill comes from her pocket |
| Cash with $3,500 paid up front | $10,500 | 1.75x | Above break-even with the same ads |
Priya's booked ROAS clears break-even and her cash ROAS does not. She pays this month's ad bill from her own pocket until the plans pay out, which limits how fast she can grow.
A gap like this is normal: about 4x on revenue and about 2x on cash. A bigger first payment lifts cash ROAS the same day, with no change to the ads.
What it looks like when the cash side works
Blake Mathews collected $40,000 on $710 of ads, five days before the webinar went live: $956 into cold Meta ads, $250 back from the funnel, so $710 net. That is about 56x on cash. See the $40,000 on $710 case study. Not typical.
8How do you improve ROAS?
The cheapest fixes are usually after the click.
| Lever | What to change | Why it moves ROAS |
|---|---|---|
| Offer | Raise the first payment, add a paid-in-full bonus | More cash per sale, same ads |
| Follow-up | Call and text everyone who signed up but did not book or show | Setter follow-up can roughly double the return on the same spend |
| Page | Add an opt-in step before the call | One operator's split test reported 10x with an opt-in vs 2.7x without, same ads and spend |
| Calls | Reminders, confirmation message, qualifying questions | More booked calls show and close |
| Creative | New ads every week, more of what already works | Cheaper clicks and calls |
Show rate is one of the fastest to move. Check yours with the show rate calculator. If you are not sure which step leaks, find the exact bottleneck in your business. For current Meta click and call costs, see how much Meta ads cost.
ROAS usually drops a little as you spend more, because the cheapest buyers are reached first. Plan for it.
9What to do this week
- Pull last month's ad spend from every ad account, including retargeting.
- From your bank, write down cash collected from those ads, minus refunds. From your CRM, write down booked sales.
- Work out your margin before ads: price minus delivery, commission and fees.
- Put the numbers in the checker above and copy the result.
- If cash ROAS is under break-even, pick one fix from the table and start it this week.
- Check it every Monday on the same dates, next to your cost per client.
- Run the full month in the ROAS calculator to see if you can raise spend. Want help reading it? See if you qualify for a call.

Frequently asked questions
How is ROAS calculated?
Divide the revenue your ads brought in by what you spent on those ads, over the same dates. $15,000 of sales from $6,000 of ads is 2.5x. If you sell on calls, run it twice: once on cash collected and once on booked sales.
What does ROAS mean and stand for?
ROAS stands for return on ad spend. It is how many dollars come back for every dollar you put into ads. You can write it as 4x, 4:1 or 400%.
What is a good ROAS?
Any ROAS above your break-even line, which is 1 divided by your margin before ads. At a 50% margin you need more than 2x. At an 80% margin, more than 1.25x. For high ticket offers, check it on cash collected.
Is 2.8 a good ROAS?
It is good if your margin before ads is above about 36%, because then 2.8x is above break-even. At a 60% margin, 2.8x keeps about $680 of profit for every $1,000 of ads. At a 30% margin it loses money.
Is 3.0 ROAS good?
For most coaching and service offers, yes. A 3x ROAS breaks even at a 33% margin. At a 50% margin it keeps $500 for every $1,000 of ads. Check it on cash collected, not only booked sales.
What is the difference between ROAS and ROI?
ROAS compares revenue to ad spend only. ROI compares profit to everything you spent, including delivery, staff and tools. You can have a 3x ROAS and still lose money if your costs eat more than two thirds of each sale.
What does a ROAS of 1.5 mean?
You got $1.50 back for every $1 of ads. That only makes money if your margin before ads is above about 67%. For most offers with real delivery costs, 1.5x is close to break-even or below it.
Why is my ad platform's ROAS different from my bank account?
For call funnels, the ad platform cannot see the sale. It sees a booked call, credits sales only for a set number of days after a click, and counts whatever value you send it. Your bank shows the cash. Plan on the cash.
