Appointment Setter: Job Description, Pay and How to Hire One

An appointment setter is the first salesperson a lead talks to. They call, text or DM new leads, ask a few qualifying questions, and book the good ones onto a closer's calendar. They do not sell the offer. Most are paid a base, a per-show fee, or commission when the call closes.

Setters turn leads into calls that show. One client booked 664 sales calls in three months. Results are not typical.

1What does an appointment setter do?

A setter works people who opted in, applied or messaged you. The closer pitches the offer. The setter only books the call and gets the lead to show.

SetterReaches every lead fast, qualifies, books the call, and gets the lead to show up.$25 to $50 per qualified call, plus 2% to 5% of upfront cash

Operators running high ticket funnels commonly report that only about 10% of leads book a call on their own. Some say setters book 60% to 70% of all their calls.

Many teams run both. Some use AI to draft DMs with a person approving them; see AI appointment setters.

3When should you hire your first setter?

When leads are waiting and you have a way to book them that works. Slow replies are the clearest sign.

Do you need a setter yet?
1. A new lead fills in your form at 2pm on a Tuesday. When does a person call?
2. How many new leads a day do you get? Count opt-ins, half-done applications, DMs and webinar sign-ups.
3. Have you booked calls from these leads yourself?
4. Is there room on the closer's calendar for more calls?
5. Where does each lead's status live?
6. What makes a call "qualified" in your business?

If leads are not the issue and you are not sure what is, find the exact bottleneck in your business.

4Appointment setter job description: 3 templates to copy

Pick the kind of setter, fill in your details, and copy it. Put real pay in it. A detailed post with a pay range and a "do not apply if" list draws fewer, better applicants. The application questions, voice note task and offer letter are in the sales hiring kit Claude skill.

Job description: webinar and VSL setter
Remote Appointment Setter (work from home): {offer}, {price}

Who we are
We help {who} get {result}.

Why this role exists
About {leads} new leads come in every day from our webinars and videos. Most don't hear from us fast enough. We need a setter to reach every one of them within minutes and book the right ones onto our sales calls.

What you'll do
- Text every new lead within 3 minutes and call within 7.
- Call everyone who watched but did not book, and everyone who started the application.
- Ask 2 or 3 questions from our script and book qualified leads onto the closer's calendar.
- Follow up with leads who didn't answer, for two weeks.
- Get every booked lead to confirm, so they show up.
- Update the CRM after every call and text.
- Send a short voice note report every evening and join the team call.

Who you are
- You are quick, warm and clear on the phone.
- You follow a script and still sound like a person.
- You have done something every day for a year or more.
- You take feedback and use it the same day.
No setting experience? That's fine. We train you on our script.

Do not apply if
- You want a salary with no performance pay.
- You can't work {hours}.
- You won't use a CRM.

Pay
{per} per qualified call booked + {comm} of upfront cash on deals closed from your calls.
Expected range at our current lead flow: {range} a month once you are up to speed.

How to apply
Fill in this form: {link}. Then send a 60-second voice note: pretend I just filled in our form and you are calling me. Then message us once a day until you hear back. We only interview people who do all three.

Post in setter and make-money-online communities, collect 100 or more applicants through a simple form, and interview 15 to 20 to hire one.

5How much do appointment setters get paid?

Most high ticket setters get performance pay. A flat appointment setter salary is rare.

Pay modelHow it worksTypicalWatch out
Per qualified call + commissionA flat fee for each call that meets your rules, plus a share of upfront cash$25 to $50 a call, plus 2% to 5% of upfront cashWrite down what "qualified" means first
Per showed call + commissionFee only when the lead turns up to the callNo common number. Set it with the calculator below.Setters push harder on confirms. Good.
Base + per-show bonusA small monthly base, plus a bonus per showed callNo common number. You set it.Keep the base small so pay follows results
Commission onlyA share of cash on closed deals, nothing elseNo common number.Hard to hire for. Setters carry all the risk.
Outsourced agencyA monthly retainer to a setting company$1,000 to $2,000 a monthPaid whether calls book or not

Whatever you pick, pay commission on upfront cash only, so setters book buyers, not browsers.

What setters earnTypical
A couple of calls a dayAbout $50 to $100 a day, plus commission
Within about six months$3,000 to $5,000 a month. A good setter, $5,000 to $6,000.
What job posts advertise$4,000 to $8,000 a month, remote, full time
Red flag in an entry-level interviewExpecting $10,000 a month within 3 months

Hourly pay is rare for high ticket setters. If you pay hourly, check job board rates for your area.

When does paying setters more pay off?

Entry-level setters on a proven script are the cheap way to start. Once ad spend is high, some teams flip it and put experienced salespeople in the setter seat.

Pay$3,000 to $5,000 a month within about six monthsAbout $80,000 to $110,000 a year
FitsOne to three setters, you coach daily, ad spend is modestEvery lead costs real money, so each extra set matters
You getLow fixed costMore sets from the same leads

Raising setter pay by a quarter across the board cost one team about $20,000 a month and let them cut about $200,000 a month of ad spend, because the stronger team booked far more from the same leads. Another lifted average setter pay from about $5,000 to $6,000 a month to about $10,000, advertised only to experienced closers with a move to closing after six months of setting, and replaced most of the team. A third offered $8,000 a month base plus 5% of closed deals and had closers from other offers asking to join.

A made-up example. You spend $60,000 a month on ads and pay two setters $5,000 each. A 25% raise costs $2,500 a month. If the stronger team books 10% more calls from the same leads, you get today's calls on about $54,500 of ads. That saves about $5,500 to pay for a $2,500 raise. At low ad spend the cheap setter wins. Once ads cost several times your setter payroll, pay is the cheaper lever.

6What does a setter team cost per showed call?

7Should you hire or outsource appointment setters?

For a high ticket offer, hire your own setters rather than use appointment setter companies.

In-house setterAppointment setter company
Typical cost$25 to $50 per qualified call, plus 2% to 5% of upfront cash$1,000 to $2,000 a month retainer

Outsourced setting services rarely last beyond a couple of months. Find a process that works yourself, then hire in-house. More on this in outsourced sales teams.

8How to interview an appointment setter

Hire on behavior, not a resume.

  1. Form and voice note. Drop anyone who skipped the voice note.
  2. Group call. Quick group calls, one to two minutes each, show who speaks clearly and stays calm.
  3. Timed task. Some send a timed task with lots of small instructions, and reject anyone who misses one. It tests traits, like attention to detail, not skills.
  4. Interview and role-play. Ask the questions below. Then play a lead who opted in yesterday and went quiet.
  5. Score them. Use the scorecard, right after each role-play.
  6. Trial. Hire the top 2 or 3 and let them compete for a month or two.

9What should a setter hit each day?

Daily targets:

NumberTarget
Speed to leadFirst text in 2 to 3 minutes, first call in 5 to 7
Outreach a dayAbout 100 messages or calls
Booking rate on outreach3% to 4%
Calls booked a dayAbout 4 per setter
Setters per closerAbout 2
Ceiling per setter90 to 120 sets a month, whatever the lead flow
Follow-up on quiet leads8 or more texts and 8 or more calls over two weeks
Show rate on their calls60% to 70% is a realistic best case
Daily reportA voice note each evening on volume, how it went, and results

About 80% of appointments come after 5 to 8 follow-ups. Most setters give up after two, so check follow-up every day. The work week caps how much one person can do. When a setter nears 90 sets a month, hire the next one; more leads will not get more out of her.

How to manage setters day to day

Our method is a short huddle every working day, run by you or a sales manager, not a weekly catch-up.

  1. Yesterday's numbers. Leads, contacted, booked, showed. Per setter, from the CRM.
  2. Two calls. Play one booked call and one lost call. Fix one line of the script.
  3. Screen share the texts. Each setter shows their messages. Coach the wording and the timing.
  4. One role-play. The objection that came up most yesterday.
  5. Feedback to marketing. What leads asked or did not know. "Leads are bad" does not count. Write down the exact words.

The biggest show rate lever is the setter or rep texting each new booking within a few hours from a real phone, ideally with a short selfie video. Give setters a real business phone line, not only CRM texts.

10Worked example: Leo hires his first setter

Leo is a made-up fitness business coach. His VSL funnel brings in about 20 leads a day. He collects $5,000 upfront per sale.

WhenWhat Leo does
Week 1Writes his setter script from his best calls. Copies the webinar and VSL template at $30 per qualified call plus 3% of upfront cash.
Week 2Gets 120 forms. 40 send the voice note. Runs three group calls, sends the timed task, interviews and role-plays 6.
Weeks 3 to 10Hires 2 to compete. Checks the 3-minute rule daily and listens to five calls a week from each.
Week 10One setter books 80 qualified calls a month with a 70% show rate. Leo keeps her.
Month 480 calls, 56 held, 11.2 sales at 20%. $56,000 upfront cash. Setter pay: $4,080, or $364 a sale and about $73 per showed call.

With his calendar full, Leo's next hire is a closer. See how to hire a high ticket closer.

12What to do this week

  1. Answer the six readiness questions. Fix the first thing it gives you.
  2. Write your setter script from your best booked calls: opener, 2 or 3 questions, the booking.
  3. Write down what a "qualified" call means, in one paragraph.
  4. Pick a pay model. Test it in the pay plan calculator and put the range in the job description.
  5. Fill in the job description generator for your kind of setter and post it.
  6. Interview everyone who sent the voice note with the same questions and the same scorecard.
  7. Set up a daily check on the 3-minute rule before the first setter starts.

Frequently asked questions

What is an appointment setter?

An appointment setter is the first salesperson a lead talks to. They call, text or DM new leads, ask a few qualifying questions, and book the good ones onto a closer's calendar. They do not sell the offer. Most are paid a base, a per-show fee, or commission when the call closes.

How much does an appointment setter earn?

Most high ticket setters are paid per qualified call plus commission, not a salary. Operators running high ticket funnels commonly report $25 to $50 per qualified call and 2% to 5% of upfront cash, which works out to about $3,000 to $5,000 a month within six months, and $5,000 to $6,000 for a good setter.

Do appointment setters make good money?

Good ones on a steady flow of leads can. $3,000 to $5,000 a month within about six months is typical, and $5,000 to $6,000 for a good setter. The money follows booked calls and closed deals, not hours. Expecting $10,000 a month within 3 months is a red flag.

How much does an appointment setter make per hour?

High ticket setters are rarely paid by the hour. A setter booking a couple of qualified calls a day makes about $50 to $100 a day plus commission. Job boards list hourly rates for general setter jobs, so check them for your area if you pay hourly.

Can I be an appointment setter with no experience?

Yes. Some operators prefer new setters with no experience, trained on a proven script, because experienced setters bring a generic playbook. What matters is a clear voice or clean writing, doing the same task every day, and taking feedback fast.

How hard is it to be an appointment setter?

The skill is simple. The hard part is doing it every day. Expect about 100 calls or messages a day, a 3% to 4% booking rate, and 8 or more follow-ups on quiet leads over two weeks. Most people quit on follow-up, not on the first call.

What is the difference between an appointment setter and a telemarketer?

A setter works warm leads who already opted in, applied or messaged you, and books them onto a sales call. A telemarketer usually calls a cold list and often tries to sell on that first call. A setter never pitches the offer.

What is the difference between a setter and a closer?

A setter reaches new leads, asks a few questions and books the good ones onto a sales call. A closer runs that sales call and takes payment. Setters are paid per qualified call or per show plus a small commission, and closers mostly on commission.

Should I hire or outsource appointment setters?

For a high ticket offer, hire in-house once you have a script that books calls. Outsourced setting agencies charge $1,000 to $2,000 a month, split focus across many clients and rarely last past a couple of months. Outsource only to test a new channel.
